Dear Fellow Democrats for Change:
The mayor’s race in Albuquerque shows us what happens when people get complacent and/or disinterested; now more than ever is the time for organizations such as ours to rise up and live up to the ideals we hold dear.
I know the exuberance of that night that we elected our President has given away to the realities/frustrations of our fragmented political system. Those checks and balances were intended by our founders to make it difficult to bring about “change.” This was so no mere whim of a majority could rush to change the foundations of our democracy.
Citizenship, in this great country of ours, is not for the faint hearted. We cannot allow or permit the slow undoing of the change we fought so hard to bring about. However at the same time, we can also not allow our “purism” to spoil any chance for reform.
If this 233 year old experiment in democracy has taught us anything; it is that we should never stop advocating our ideals but we cannot allow our ideals to become martyrs for our political opponents’ agenda.
So now is the time my fellow Democrats, to stand up, once again, to speak thoughtfully, while others shout; to listen, while others espouse their contrary views; and to reignite our dedication to lead the land we love and bring about the world we dream.
Will you stand with me?
